Anti-horror movie hysteria in the U.K. in the 1980s led to the release of a so-called “video nasties” list of banned horror movies, which included iconic titles such as Possession, The Evil Dead and Cannibal Holocaust. Director Prano Bailey-Bond’s debut feature pays tribute to that time via the story of a film censor who becomes convinced that she sees her missing sister in a horror movie.

Dashcam

Rob Savage’s Host is perhaps the only decent piece of art made about the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown, a terrifying look at a Zoom séance gone wrong. Riding high on the success of that movie, Savage ups the ante with Dashcam, a completely demented story of an anti-vaccine proponent having the worst night of her life, all told via a social media livestream.

Fear Street

Why wait decades to build a franchise when you can do it in three weeks? That was the question Netflix asked with the three Fear Street movies, released this year over three consecutive weeks. The content was not as radical as the release schedule, but all three were effective and affectionate horror tributes to the teen slashers of the 1990s (1994), the original slashers of the ’70s (1978), and the folk horrors of the ’70s (1666) respectively.

In the Earth

Ben Wheatley quickly followed his underwhelming adaptation of Rebecca by returning to his roots: unsettling folk horror set in the British countryside. In the vein of Kill List and A Field in England, In the Earth sees scientists trying to communicate with a mysterious presence in the woods, with a lot of psychedelic spookiness thrown in for good measure.

Malignant

Malignant is simultaneously the best and worst horror movie of the year. After an hour or so of what can only be described as the most generic studio Hollywood slog, the movie suddenly cracks to reveal one of the most unhinged horror movie endings of recent years. Love it or hate it, you will be unable to stop talking about it for months.

The Night House

Rebecca Hall instantly enters the pantheon of scream queens with her killer performance in this psychological horror in which she plays a woman who starts to believe she is being haunted by her dead husband after she starts to discover his secret life.

Sean Mathias?s comic, lucid production at Windsor gives very good reasons why that is. Rendered into easy modern speech by the playwright Martin Sherman (the author of Bent and Mrs Henderson Presents, among many things), here?s a staging that underlines the ephemerality of identities, with a motley company of actors, cast race-, gender- and age-blind.

He did the same this autumn with Hamlet, of course, with an elderly Hamlet in Ian McKellen and a female Polonius. That motleyness seemed all of a piece with the reassembling of a society fractured communally by Covid. This time it has a different effect: it stresses Chekhov’s insight that human beings tend to posture and perform, that we too easily comfort ourselves by re-enacting old grudges or dreams, toys, promises and tricks.

Bankrupted by her total lack of financial nous, she has to face consequences, and Lopakhin, the son of one of her family?s serfs ? or slaves, as Sherman baldly puts it ? is now a rich, self-made man who can save her from destitution by buying her orchard and chopping it down for smallholdings. That?s very poor taste, she sniffs.

Martin Shaw gives Lopakhin, under the veneer of class vengefulness, a sentimentality that hints at some long-ago attraction between the two before class and adulthood steered them apart, perhaps also an explanation for his hesitation about proposing to Ranyevskaya?s adopted daughter, the conscientious Varya ? an urgent and truthful performance by Kezrena James.

But this is a comedy, Chekhov maintained – many stagers beg to disagree – and the two outstanding performances are straight from broad comic music hall. The family?s curious governess, Charlotta, is the character where Chekhov lays his clues to the tone he sought ? she?s an abandoned daughter of the circus, a conjurer and ventriloquist, a fatalistic survivor, and the arresting Alison Halstead (pictured with Jenny Seagrove’s Gaev and Martin Shaw’s Lopakhin) has a huge, charismatic voice inside her small, agile body.

The story unfolds across two separate time periods: the present day and the 18th century – an era of social, political, technological and scientific revolutions. In a continual toing and froing in time, the film follows in the footsteps of its protagonist Eva (Dutch actress Lotte Verbeek, known for her role in the series Borgia), a young and brilliant oncological surgeon who has dropped everything to study the history of medicine at a small university. She seems especially obsessed with the writings of Johan Anmuth (the ever-impassive British actor Charles Dance, Game of Thrones), a doctor who lived in Prussia in the 18th century. A short prologue shows us a ghostly child separated from his mother by some sort of temporal wall, and in the successive jumps backwards in time to 1729 we realise that the lead actors are effectively impersonating characters from the past and present (a bit like in the Wachowski sisters? Cloud Atlas): Dance is also the doctor who looks after Eva through her illness and pregnancy, Lotte Verbeek herself is also the noblewoman Elizabeth von Ouerbach who has hired Johan Anmuth as her own personal doctor and mentor, Swedish actor Sverrir Gudnason (wonderful in Borg/McEnroe [+see also:

) is Eva?s faculty advisor at the university but also the young doctor Nils Lindgren, whose innovative techniques see him clashing with the elderly Anmuth.

The truth is that Lindring is a forerunner of applied biotechnologies, while old Anmuth is nothing more than a Freud prototype (Sigmund was born a century later), a doctor who would rather listen to his patients stories, analyse them and interpret their dreams in order to uncover and cure illnesses. But Eva comes into possession of one of his manuscripts (the titular book of dreams) which contains the hopes and fears of over 1,800 patients, and these stories of the living and the dead will become a single spiritual river which influences Eva?s very existence.

The slow flashbacks into a form of nature that is silent but also bursting with symbolic and transcendental signs are reminiscent of Malick?s ancestral and animistic visual style (Hintermann was second unit director on the Italian filmset of Tree of Life). It?s a type of nature which, in this film, envelops and protects the dead, and a backdrop which echoes the vegetal and aquatic performances of Ana Mendieta, and the body art produced by Huanca woman and her peers. The non-visual digital effects entrusted to LRNZ, the camera movements and the cinematography of Jörg Widmer (who was a cameraman for Wenders, Tarantino, Haneke, Polanski and Bela Tarr) all transform this semi-period drama film into a work that?s highly gratifying both for the eyes and the brain. The screenplay, however, written by Hintermann and Marco Saura, takes on too many Malickian themes ? the female universe, the body, the synthesis between the past and the present, and so much more ? and ultimately loses its way in various redundant explorations, mystical complications and over-explanatory dialogue. But the magnificent closing credits are definitely not to be missed.
